Are Gay unions the same as marriage?

Regarding the “religious duck,” many people argue that gay marriage is against Biblical teaching, and therefore, should not be allowed.  I agree with an opinion that I read which states, “It is up to each church to decide whether or not gay unions are acceptable within their doctrine, and established rites” (http://www.loveandpride.com/GayMarriageDebate).

My only issue with gay 'marriage' is that one: people could take this to mean that the law is forcing churches to accept their union as holy when it is against their religion and two: unions could help far more people than gays. There are two old ladies who live across the street from me. They aren't gay, they just live together and have grown to love each other like family. Neither has any surviving family in the area. They have expressed to me more than once that they wish there was a way to legally be on each other's medical and financial documents to make things easier. Civil unions would make that possible.
