why is it that nobody cares? What happened to America, the leader in techology and the space race? Why is it that we gave up on our dreams of exploration of space? No one seemed to care outside of the flight path over Washington DC.
We did not give up our dreams of space exploration. The space shuttle program is over 30 years old, which makes alot of its technology 40 years old. It is too expensive to retrofit old shuttles. We are retiring the program. We are still going to put people in space. The Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle is going to going to step right into place for exploration missions. The SLS program in conjunction with the J-2X Engine will launch crew in the Orion MPCV to support the International Space Station. Kennedy Space Center is getting a facelift to support multiple launch vehicle for NASA and commercial use. Perhaps it is the circle of people that you observed who were perceived to not care about Discovery's flyover DC, but everyone in my office felt humbled and respect for a mission accomplished.
My friend in DC was taking pictures of this and texting me with them. He had no idea it was headed to the Smithsonian. Looks like a trip to DC needs to happen soon.
