Women flocking to reality shows

From the LA Times Company Town:

Women flee their base. Women are abandoning some of the cable networks that cater to them in favor of channels that focus more on reality shows. The New York Post crunched some ratings for the first quarter of the year and noted that Lifetime, HGTV and Hallmark channel have all seen their female viewership decline sharply, while MTV, home of "Jersey Shore" and "16 and Pregnant" had growth. Brad Adgate, an advertising executive told the Post that "women just want to be entertained. They're balancing careers and motherhood and sometimes don't want to do a lot of thinking -- this is just a moment to themselves." I think that line about not wanting to do a lot of thinking may come back to bite him.

There certainly is a shift, in my opinion, in how women are thinking. "Jersey Shore", "16 and Pregnant", and "Housewives" do not qualify as entertainment to me, and I find it more than a bit dissapointing that they are so popular.
Being demanding, ignorant, disrespectful(to self or others), and holding an airs of, usually unearned entitlement, is hardly grounds for worship. I mean 'worship' in the sense of 'monkey see monkey do' emulation, instead of designing ones self. This country's young and aging population will not have a leg to stand on, if these shows are the lessons absorbed after a day of 'real life'.

Talking to some of my friends that are younger than me are watching the reality shows. I have tried to watch them but I do not feel entertained. I do not feel women should act this way and I learn nothing from this. Maybe because of my age, I use to watch soap operas and grew out of them. I like movies to entertain me and Lifetime and Hallmark does that for me. Yeah entertainment is good but women screaming at each, etc., is not reality. I would never speak to my friends like that and I have respect for them. This is how I was raised. I am like my age, some younger than I, don't know the real world. This can go on to a debate but I do not know everything but I am happy with my life as it is.

This doesn't surprise me. Basic Lifetime fare is a story about an abused child or a battered woman. Hardly what one would call entertainment for entertainment purposes. "Jersey Shore" and "16 and Pregnant" are brainless, soul sucking shows, guilty pleasures for those looking to forget about their own lives for an hour or two. Watch and episode of "Jersey Shore" and you too will be rooting for these brainless, soul suckers. Lifetime still has "Project Runway" going for it.
