There are now 6.1 million people who have been out of work for six months or more. The average duration of unemployment is well past anything the U.S. has seen in the past 30 years. 9.7% national unemployment does not reflect those who have fallen off the books or who are not earning considerably less in part time jobs. The government conservative estimate is that one if three Americans are underemployed and one in five fully unemployed. NPR has more.
